Recently, the advanced CMOS image sensor supplier SmartSens (stock code 688213) launched a new 0.16MP ultra-compact back-illuminated global shutter CMOS image sensor - SC020HGS. This new product utilizes SmartSens' advanced SmartGS™-2 Plus and Lightbox IR® near-infrared enhancement technology, boasting ultra-high frame rates, high sensitivity, and ultra-low power consumption among other performance advantages. The chip size is only 1.75mm x 1.75mm, and the integrated package size is as small as 2mm x 2mm, making it perfectly suited for micro-camera modules. It meets the requirements of iris recognition, blink detection, eye tracking, motion recognition, and other facial capture functions for AR/VR-type smart wearable devices.
SmartGS™-2 Plustechnology-backed
Accurate and smooth image capture.
The various visual and facial interaction functions of AR/VR-type smart wearable devices rely on high-precision eye tracking and facial motion capture. Equipped with SmartSens' advanced SmartGS™-2 Plus technology, the SC020HGS is a back-illuminated global shutter image sensor that can provide cameras with ultra-high frame rates and distortion-free imaging effects while maintaining ultra-low power consumption. This meets the accurate and smooth image capture requirements of AR/VR-type smart terminals.
Clear and accurate image acquisition is crucial for assisting AR/VR-type devices in completing human-machine interactions. With the support of SmartSens' SmartGS™-2 Plus technology, the SC020HGS can capture moving object scenes clearly and stably, ensuring accurate and distortion-free imaging. This helps improve the accuracy of motion recognition.
The SC020HGS supports a 240fps ultra-high frame rate and an ultra-high shutter speed (PLS>30000), greatly avoiding issues such as image stuttering, blurring, and ghosting. This fully meets the requirements of AR/VR-type devices for high fidelity and smooth image capture, enabling smooth, accurate, and responsive high-quality interactive experiences.
Ultra-low power consumption.
To adapt to the usage scenarios and power characteristics of end products, the SC020HGS achieves a super low power consumption design as low as 48.4mW (240fps) while maintaining high performance. This can relieve the overall power consumption pressure for devices powered by external power sources/batteries, effectively enhancing the device's battery life.
Lightbox IR®Near-infrared enhancement
Clear imaging in low-light conditions.
Thanks to SmartSens' innovative SmartGS™-2 Plus and Lightbox IR® near-infrared enhancement technology, the SC020HGS has high sensitivity with a peak quantum efficiency (peak QE) of up to 95%, comparable to market equivalent back-illuminated stacked (Stack BSI) products. Under 850nm and 940nm near-infrared wavelengths, its quantum efficiency is improved by approximately 10% and 5% compared to similar products. Therefore, even in low-light conditions with low illumination, the SC020HGS can help cameras capture clear and stable images, ensuring accurate and smooth image acquisition. This meets the flexible and free switching requirements of end devices across various usage scenarios.
Complete solution.
Diverse application areas.
The SC020HGS features a 1/14-inch optical format and a 2.2µm pixel size, with a resolution of 400H*400V. Its chip size is only approximately 1.75mm x 1.75mm, and the integrated package size is as small as 2mm x 2mm. Such an ultra-compact size is well-suited for eye movement tracking, iris recognition, and other micro-camera applications inside AR/VR-type smart wearable devices.
The SC020HGS can be combined with SmartSens' previously released SC038HGS (designed for 6DoF systems, suitable for external cameras in AR/VR-type devices) to form a complete CIS solution for smart wearable devices. This meets the upgrade requirements of end products that seek to balance high performance with cost-effectiveness.
Currently, samples of the SC020HGS have been shipped, and mass production is expected to commence in Q3 2024.
