According to South Korean media on March 4th, Samsung Display is set to replace some equipment in the OLEDoS (also known as MicroOLED) production line within the Tianan A1 production line starting from Q2 this year.
Previously, Samsung Display had set up a pilot production line for MicroOLED on the Tianan A1 production line last year. However, according to industry sources in South Korea, the production line did not yield satisfactory results during nearly a year of testing. Issues in the module process are believed to be the main contributing factor.
In response, Samsung Display has decided to import alternative modules and testing equipment starting from the second quarter of this year. Considering that core equipment such as vapor deposition can continue to be used, it is anticipated that the trial production will resume from the second half of this year.
The reconstruction of the MicroOLED production line by Samsung Display is expected to accelerate the commercialization of its MicroOLED technology.
根据结构的不同,MicroOLED分为RGB-MicroOLED和W-MicroOLED。RGB采用直接蒸镀红、绿、蓝三种像素的方式。W-MicroOLED使元件发光为白色,并通过彩色滤光片来实现色彩。
Samsung Display is developing both methods. It is reported that the Tianan A1 production line has been consistently working on RGB-MicroOLED development, while the A2 production line is focused on W-MicroOLED development, utilizing vapor deposition equipment from Sunic and Tokki, respectively.
Compared to W-MicroOLED, RGB-MicroOLED exhibits superior brightness and power efficiency. Benefiting from this advantage, Apple is also planning to incorporate RGB-MicroOLED in the next-generation Vision Pro set to be released in 2027. Samsung Display is also aiming to supply this technology to Apple.
However, the FMM (Fine Metal Mask) technology, a crucial component of the vapor deposition process for RGB-MicroOLED, presents significant technical challenges. The actual commercialization of RGB-MicroOLED is likely to be slower than that of W-MicroOLED. The trial production line within A1 this time may also be more inclined towards the trial production of W-OLED.
Furthermore, in May of last year, Samsung Display invested $218 million to acquire the company eMagin, which possesses relevant technological capabilities in RGB-MicroOLED, signaling an active investment initiative.
