On March 6th, according to the latest report released by market research firm IDC, the global AR/VR headset shipments in Q4 2023 increased by 130.4% year-on-year, driven by the easing of macroeconomic pressures and the launch of new products.
Jitesh Ubrani, Research Manager for IDC's Mobile and Consumer Device Trackers, stated:
Several quarters ago, Meta's market share was surpassed by Pico and later by Sony. However, due to its ongoing hardware subsidies and the launch of Quest 3, Meta's market share has been steadily climbing.
Although the entry of Apple and new devices from other manufacturers in this field will undoubtedly add pressure, Meta's leading position is unlikely to be significantly affected in 2023. This is because the company's strategy of low cost and high production volume will set it apart from other competitors.
In the full year of 2023, the shipments of AR/VR headsets decreased by 23.5% compared to 2022. The uncertainty in the macroeconomic environment brought downward pressure on demand in the first half of the year. Most companies relied on traditional products launched at least a year ago, resulting in a double-digit decline. It wasn't until the economies in major regions began to recover, and new products were introduced that the market started to rebound, but it was not sufficient to offset the decline in the first half of the year.
