MTP Performance Testing System
As XR technology and the market continue to develop and mature, XR headsets have become the bridge connecting the real and virtual worlds. When users wear XR headsets (a collective term for AR/VR/MR headsets) and move their heads, the XR headset should update the visuals as quickly as possible to ensure the smoothness and stability of the virtual scenes.
Once there is significant delay in the visuals, it will lead to inconsistency between the wearer's visual and vestibular sensations, resulting in dizziness. How to quantitatively describe this delay and thus measure the degree of dizziness caused by XR headsets? This indicator is called MTP latency.
*MTP latency, which stands for Motion to Photon Latency, represents the degree of alignment between visual observation through XR headsets and head movements, indicating the delay time between the wearer's actual head movement and the image seen.
XR headset manufacturers such as Meta, Microsoft, and Apple all consider MTP latency as a crucial factor for users to experience immersive interactions while wearing XR headsets. In current mainstream applications of XR headsets, such as watching movies, gaming, education, and training, there are very high demands on MTP latency. Oculus has mentioned that (VR) MTP needs to be less than 20 milliseconds , while Bernard Kress, the optical architect of HoloLens, suggested, " (AR) MTP needs to be less than 10 milliseconds. If it's greater than this number, you will feel discomfort and nausea."
For more precise and efficient measurement of the MTP latency indicator in XR headsets, S-Dream Lab collaborated with China Academy of Information and Communications Technology (CAICT) Thair Terminal Laboratory for a year to jointly develop the MTP Performance Testing System — MTP-1000.
MTP Performance Testing System (MTP-1000)
The MTP Performance Testing System adopts a purely visual, non-intrusive, and fully automated measurement approach, which can adapt to almost all XR headsets on the market. It supports MTP latency performance testing within the range of hundreds of milliseconds, with measurement accuracy reaching the millisecond level.
The MTP Performance Testing System utilizes an ultra-low-latency automatic focusing system, with focusing speed comparable to the human eye. Coupled with high-precision rotary axes and professionally calibrated testing scenarios, it can accurately simulate the real movements of the wearer's head with XR headsets. It is equipped with a time synchronization module, enabling ultra-low-latency synchronization between visual and motion platforms.
The system supports the free writing of complex testing scenarios and also enables one-click retrieval of MTP latency values. It caters to a wide range of users, from XR headset professional developers to assembly line workers, offering software solutions tailored to different personnel needs.
The successful launch of the S-DREAM® MTP Performance Testing System (MTP-1000) signifies innovation and precision in detection. It can greatly benefit XR headset research and development units, manufacturing enterprises, and evaluation institutions by providing a complete end-to-end solution from research and development, production validation to evaluation. This system enables accurate assessment of MTP latency in XR headsets, significantly improving the reliability and efficiency of research and development, quality control, and evaluation processes.
