On June 17, Unity officially announced that Unity 6 Preview will add pre-release support for Apple’s visionOS 2 “in the coming weeks.” Unity 6 is the latest version of the Unity game engine, which is commonly used to create VR content. This version is currently still in the preview stage and is not recommended for formal project development. The stable version is expected to be released later this year.

This week, Unity announced the upcoming release of 2.x this version of the visionOS package will require Unity 6 support and add support for some core features of visionOS 2:

  • 使用 Metal 渲染并支持透视 (Rendering Metal with passthrough): This feature enables developers to add perspective functionality to their content while taking advantage of Metal 5-compatible Unity graphics capabilities.

  • 可调整大小的空间 (Resizable volumes): Help developers better control the size of objects within a limited range.

  • 动态光照和阴影 (Dynamic lights and shadows): Improve the immersion and realism of mixed reality experiences.

  • 自定义悬停效果 (Custom hover effects): Allows developers to better control the visual hover interaction effects when users look at objects.

  • : Achieve richer visual effects, such as the appearance of glass materials in the SwiftUI interface.

The "Render with Metal with Perspective Support" feature means developers are no longer limited to using the limited-feature PolySpatial solution when making AR applications.

  • 混合形状支持 (Support for blendshapes): Achieve a wider range of geometric applications, such as deformation, smooth and natural animation, etc.

  • 混合应用 (Hybrid Apps): Supports mode switching between mixed reality and fully immersive experiences.

  • 多空间支持 (Support for multiple volumes): Achieve richer interactive content.

  • 实体图形支持 (Support for entities graphics): Achieve a more diverse visual experience.

  • 着色器调试 (Shader debugging): Help developers create and customize shaders more efficiently.

Unity officially stated that it will continue to optimize performance and improve overall stability, and advises developers not to use it in official projects for the time being. However, since visionOS 2 itself is currently in beta and a stable version will be released this fall, this should not have much impact.

The Unity visionOS developer package still needs to be used with Unity Pro, which is priced at US$2,040 per year (currently about 14,843 yuan). For independent developers and users wanting to try visionOS, that’s a hefty price tag, especially considering they’ll also need to spend $3,500 for the headset itself.
